Site theme upgrade - community4
Posted Tuesday, 16 November, 2010 - 16:57 by the FiddlerPlease refresh your browsers! (F5)
The new theme has slightly cleaner colors and a tweaked layout that should be easier on the eyes. It also implements a CSS-based frontpage that should be slightly faster to load.
This is the forth revision of the original community theme and has been tested on IE8, Firefox 4, Chrome 7, Opera 10.6 and Safari 5. It should degrade gracefully on older browsers, excepting possibly IE6 which is completely unsupported.
Please let me know if you encounter any problems or have any suggestions for improvement!

The boxes inside boxes look a bit unusual (they pile up) but it still "feels" better.
Firefox 3.6.blabla
Re: Site theme upgrade - community4
I was starting to find the shadow effect distracting, so I toned it down to about half strength. It looks more like a thick border now, but retains a sense of depth that helps distinguish between elements. Much better!
(Compare with Internet Explorer which fails to render shadows completely. The result is flat and ugly).

Ok, I've fixed a few other things that have always annoyed me, but never had a chance before:
It is now possible to associate a Launchpad account with your username and share a single login with that. True OpenID integration is still some way off, unfortunately.
Re: Site theme upgrade - community4
Decent touchups, I like it :) Works flawless with Firefox 4.0 beta 7 and the IE8 that ships with win7.
Only thing that jumps into mind that could use some love is the behaviour when you try to read a discussion that spans multiple pages. I'd rather get forwarded to the very last post made, rather than the first.
Re: Site theme upgrade - community4
Agree. Especially tab jumping. Yeah, I'm a keyboard fan.
I'd also vote for the goto last post. However, if I recall correctly that's a drupal limitation or what. Some posts on this are buried somewhere here. So I'm asking for a similar thing instead: Is it possible to give us a choice between first-to-last or reverse chronological post ordering?
Re: Site theme upgrade - community4
I have disabled CSS for Internet Explorer 5, 5.5 and 6. It's not pretty but at least the site is usable now.
Re: Site theme upgrade - community4
Nice theme indeed. Good work about that :-)
I think, however, that instead of a "Search" link in the top panel, that leads to a mostly empty page with a search text box, you should just put the search text box in the top panel.
This would save the user a click, and will be easier to spot (most sites use this method now, so users just look for a text box - first in the top right corner, then in the top left corner, than in other places.)
Itai.

I agree. I didn't add a search box, because it was very difficult to position correctly on IE6/7. Now that IE6 support is dropped, I think I can make that work.
