No secret sauce, several people measured performance and filed bug reports with their results (or, even better, patches!) Matrix multiplication is around 7x faster now, for example, and there are lots of possibilities for optimization in other parts.
Mono.SIMD will bring further improvements, especially on mobile devices. I'm not planning to work on the math library in the near future (other parts need to be improved first), but help is very welcome indeed!
Anyone interested in helping, please open a feature request to coordinate our efforts.

No, Mono.SIMD is not integrated. However, several math functions have been optimized significantly in the nightly builds.
