Windows shows for an instant then disappears

Hi,

I have just started using OpenTK and am running into a weird problem. To start out, I just used the code from http://www.opentk.com/doc/chapter/0. I followed the instructions on how to set the project up, it compiles fine, but when I run it, the window shows up for an instant and then disappears. I don't get an exception or a crash notification, no indication that anything has gone wrong beyond the fact that the program isn't running. I have no error messages either so I have nothing to indicate what went wrong. I am wondering where the problem could be. It can't be in the code since I am using the code from the opentk website. I have used opengl before in c++ and it works on my computer, just opentk does not seem to work for some reason. Does opentk have any logs or other information that it outputs?

What Operating System and GPU are you using? Do you, by any chance, have a dual-GPU system (e.g. Intel + Nvidia "Optimus")?

As a sanity check, run the example browser (Examples.exe) from the start menu or from the installation directory (opentk/Binaries/OpenTK/Release). Double click a few of the examples - do they also disappear in the same way?

If yes, then try the following:

  1. Double-click OpenTK.sln and build the project in debug mode. The binaries will be placed in opentk/Binaries/OpenTK/Release. Try running the example browser again, and post its debug log here.
  2. Try copying SDL2 from opentk/Dependencies/x86 or opentk/Dependencies/x64 to your application directory. This uses a different backend that tends to be more stable. Does it work any better?

The examples run fine. But If I take the source code from the examples page and try to run it the same flash happens.
I am running Windows 7 64 bit. I have no problem with my C#, I have been making programs with it for ages. I have also used opengl in c++ with no problems. I have even dllimported some of the opengl functions into c# with no problems, but I thought I would use opentk. I am sure it is something small, but I can't figure it out. I am using .net framework 4.0.

I downloaded TaoFramework and I got that to work fine. I could use the examples and I even managed to compile and execute them no problem. Is there some weird configuration problem I am having with opentk? It seems to be a very weird problem.

The fact that the examples run strongly suggests that this neither a bug in OpenTK nor some strange incompatibility with your system.

Which version of Visual Studio are you using?

If you are using VS2010 or newer, try installing the nuget package. This is compiled for .Net 4.0, which might behave differently (the dll from sourceforge is compiled for .Net 2.0.)

That said, I was not able to reproduce the issue using VS2013. I created a new console project (.Net 4.0 framework), added references to OpenTK.dll & System.Drawing.dll and successfully ran the sample code from the documentation. I tried to switch to different frameworks (from 2.0 to 4.5.1), which did not make a difference.

Edit: it would be worth trying to compile your project with a debug version of OpenTK.dll. This will print debugging information in the output window (ctrl-w,o) which might help pinpoint the cause.

Indeed, I remember sometimes to download projects from Github and they did not work and throw exceptions etc. Then I went to project options and switched the version to .NET 4.
