Yes, both Bazaar (the source control system) and Launchpad are pretty awesome. Only downside, Bazaar does not yet offer any good GUI frontend or IDE integration.
Were I to start a new project now, Launchpad would probably be my first choice.

I thought CVS/SVN was supported ..?

It's the latter. Quoting:
Launchpad provides free hosting of Bazaar branches and an import process that lets people work in Bazaar even if your primary version control system is an older tool such as Subversion or CVS.
(Disclaimer: never actually used it myself.)
